Overview

This 4 Days birding tour is one way of exploring the birds of western Uganda. This region is a popular habitat for more than 70% of Uganda’s total population of bird species. Bird species found here majorly include; the Albertine rift endemics, Rwenzori endemics, migratory species and much more.

Day 1
Day 1: Birding in Mabamba Bay Wetland and transfer to Lake Mburo

Be picked by a professional guide from the hotel you will have spent the night and travel to Mabamba bay wetland in Mpigi district along Masaka highway. Mabamba is a very important birding area in Uganda where most birders are sure of spotting the shoebill stock plus several other bird species.

Upon arrival, bird the bay wetland and see the theRufous Bellied Heron, Purple Swamphen, Reed Warbler(s), Pygmy and Spur Winged Goose, Lesser Jacana and the African, African Marsh Harrier and many others.

In the afternoon after lunch, embark on the journey and transfer to Lake Mburo national park in Mbarara.

Day 2
Day 2: Early morning birding & transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

In the morning, have breakfast and take a birding excursion within Lake Mburo national park. This is a birder’s haven where travelers listen to the whispers of the little birds. Walk through the park upto the edge of the forest identifying over 350 bird species including the Red Papyrus Gonolek, black papyrus Gonolek, and yellow papyrus Gonolek found in the papyrus swamp areas, Abyssinian ground hornbill, African fishing eagle, saddle billed stork, white winged warbler, and so much more.

Have lunch, sign out of the lodge and transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. This is the most visited park in Uganda due to its wildlife varsity. So a trip here will expose you to both bird species and wildlife species. On the way have striking views of the beautiful scenery, Kigezi hills, Rwenzori Mountainsand undulating savanna plains.

Day 3
Day 3: Morning game drive and a boat cruise on Kazinga Channel

Having had your breakfast, go for the morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth national park, a drive that only takes a few minutes to start spotting the various wildlife species including the buffaloes, elephants, lions, warthogs, Uganda Kobs, hyenas, bushbucks and many others and several bird species including the Palm-nut Vulture, Hooded Vulture, African White-backed Vulture, Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture, Lappet-faced Vulture, Brown Snake Eagle, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Bateleur and Long-created Eagle plus many others.

In the afternoon, take a launch cruise at the famous Kazinga channel that connects Lake Edward to Lake George. It is probably one of the longest channels in the world. A sail at the edge of the channel gives sights of the Raptors, African Mourning Dove, Squire-tailed Nightjar, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Swamp Nightjar, Blue-napped Mousebird, Grey-Headed Kingfisher, Pygmy Kingfisher, Little Bee-eater, and Nubian Woodpecker among others.

Day 4
Day 4: Departure

Wake up in the morning, have breakfast and check out of the hotel. Then embark on your journey back to Kampala or directly to the airport in Entebbe for your flight back home. You will have an en-route lunch in Mbarara at Igongo cultural center and also via the equator monument for photo moments and craft shopping.
